Mattie shyly stepped inside the pub, looking at the place with slight awe on his face. The place had the feel of an open galley ship, the smell of the sea permeating this place. It was a busy place, but gave off such a warmth that Mattie felt like he was finally home. Something in the air in this place gave him comfort in that he would finally find what he had been searching for was here. His eyes roamed over the paintings on the wall of different ships and battle scenes.
Mattie spotted someone at the counter who was serving drinks and working the rooms for people to stay. Mattie shyly moved over, a lot more wary of what he or she might do to him. He quietly approached, his skirts making little to no sound and he quietly spoke up, " Umm, my apologies for interrupting you, sir. But I was wondering if you were hiring workers for the pub. I-I need a place to stay and work, so I was hoping that you might have a place for me to stay here and work." Mattie unconsciously fiddled with his hair, his free hand clenched in his skirt, giving away tiny signals that he was exactly what he seemed to be.

Caroline had been working the Salty Sea for a little over a week, but, since bars were run pretty much the same way universally, and the European had the prior experience of being employed at two, she had no problem settling into the rhythm of its hustle and bustle.
As she was busily humming and polishing a glass, it took her a moment to register the quiet voice, but once she did, Caroline turned around, raising an eyebrow at being called 'sir'. It took her a moment to spot the inquiring young woman. She blinked, momentarily startled by a feeling of deja vouz, before smiling, adjusting her glasses with the blade of her palm. "I am not the owner, but I'm sure that it will not be a problem." She spoke clear English, but with a strong accent.
Setting the glass down on the counter, the European stepped down off the stool behind the bar, bustling around to meet the other blonde. She looked up, holding her hand out, and bobbed a light curtsey, "Gudde Mëtte, my name is Caroline Bausch. I was recently employed here as well." She paced past the other, one hand holding her skirt as she gestured Matthew to follow, "If you follow me, the owner should be just this way."
Gudde Mëtte = Good Afternoon

Mattie flushed in shame as she noticed that the person behind the counter was female. An odd note sung in the back of Mattie's head, one of recognition and he knew without a doubt that this was a nation-human. Mattie smiled softly and shyly, shaking the lady's hand and curtsying as well. " Bon après-midi, Miss. Bausch, and thank you for showing me the way. I do hope this hasn't bothered you." Mattie quietly followed behind, having picked up her skirts briefly to follow the older woman through the crowds. He blushed shyly at a few of the whistles thrown his way, his mind working out how to create a pair of breasts to confuse the other workers and citizens. Mattie kept silent and ghost-like behind the other female, nervous and excited at the same time.

After calling down one of the other girls to take her place behind the bar, Caroline looked back to Matthew. She airly waved her hand, giggling as she paced through the mildly crowded floor, "Pas du tout, mon bon ami. That is a cute accent, by the way. Canadian French?"
For some reason she couldn't put her finger on, Caroline found that she rather liked the young woman--almost as though there was a reason to be grateful towards them. 'Well, if she is hired, Maurice, the girls, and I won't have to handle the bar's afternoon shift completely on our lonesome,' she reasoned, her head jerking up as they passed a gaggle of wolf-whistlers.
Caroline sighed, rolling her eyes slightly and glancing back at the other again, "You will have to get used to that, I'm afraid--this island persistantly provides the most rowdy crowds I have ever tended, day and night. The pay is good, though, and the rent cheap, since you also intend on finding a place to stay." As she spoke, Caroline lead them into a darker back hallway, turning to face the other fully and smiling.
Pas du tout, mon bon ami = Not at all, my good friend
The grateful feeling is because in WWII the Grand Duke's family took refuge in Montreal to escape the German invasion in 1940. Actually, I can imagine the entire BeNeLux area being fond of Canada--Mattie helped Belgium regain her independence in both wars, and Netherlands sends tulips every year.

Mattie's face paled and his lips tightened in response to the question, a bad note singing in the back of his head. He hated it when people found out where he hailed from, but it wasn't that he hated the country, gods no, he loved the country... it was the government and military that he hated. Mattie smiled sadly and murmured quietly, " Tres bien, Mlle. Bausch, it is French-Canadian. I was brought up in Canada so it still seeps through sometimes."
Mattie smiled gently as the woman explained about the customers, giggling softly at the thought of those rowdy men finding out he was a male. Mattie hid a tiny grin and murmured, " I will get used to it I suppose. Thank you for leading me to the owner." Mattie tilted his head to the side and curtsied to the older woman, keeping by her side as he waited for the manager to show up, both nervous and calm.

Caroline nodded, “I suspected as much—back home, we had a foreign exchange student from Montreal as a busboy. Charming, but clumsy—had the makings of a cinematographer, as I understand it.” She smiled at Mattie, waving her hand at his thanks, “As I said, pas du tout.”
She bustled over to a door from where loud shifting noises were coming. Knocking a rapid tattoo, the tiny European raised her voice, "Maurice! There is a new girl, and she is looking to be hired."
A couple of grunts later, the sound of something heavy being set down on the floor, and a few heavy footsteps later, a heavy set bald man with a full red beard opened the door, wiping off the sweat on his neck with a clean but ragged cloth. He gave Matthew a once over, snorting not unkindly, before looking to Caroline. " 'Aight, thanks, Carol. Now get back to the bar, eh? Boys are always thirsty."
Caroline bit back the automatic desire to correct her employer, nodding shortly and bustling past Matthew, giving the other an encouraging smile.
Maurice leant against the threshold, tilting his head to look Matthew crosswise and scratching the underside of his chin. "So, Miss. Any particular reason I should be hiring ya? Other than the fact that ya seem to be charming me current employees."

Mattie watched Caroline leave before turning his attention back to Maurice. He crossed his arms over his chest, forgetting for a moment that women curved their arms under their chest to keep from squashing them. " I believe that I will be a good asset to your team. One of the reasons I came to Toruga was that I was... hiding from some people who wished me harm." Mattie eye-balled the older man and sighed, sliding off his necklace to hold in his hands.
He opened his mouth and spoke regularly, the voice changer in the pendant no longer making it female, " I am in hiding because technically I'm male... I need a place to stay and work so I ran to Tortuga and came here." Mattie slid the collar back on and adjusted it so it sat back in it's old spot. He reopened his mouth and his female voice came out, " If I can work here, I can promise that I'll do anything you ask of me beyond doing favors for others in any way that may compromise my female appearance to others. I can sing, dance, clean, organize... you name it, I can most like do it, or learn to do it well." Mattie dropped his hands to his skirt and sunk them into the material, waiting for the older male's decision.

Maurice’s face was carefully expressionless as Matthew started his introduction, raising one eyebrow and nodding along as the other explained what was, honestly, not that unusual a situation for anyone hiring in Tortuga. Both eyebrows went up as the other revealed how deeply the disguise extended, pale blue eyes blinking as his jaw worked behind the massive red beard. By the end of Matthew’s speech, however, Maurice managed to regain some measure of composure, standing up straight from the threshold and looking down at Matthew.
“…Truth be told, ain’t be the first time, and bloody well likely not t’ be the last that someone come up for hire in dubious circumstance,” Maurice glanced the other over, and snorted lightly, mouth screwing up in an unreadable twitch that did not look unfriendly as much as amused, “Honestly, not even the first time it was a bloke in lady’s drawers, though ya wear a dress better than ol’ Roe ever did, God rest ‘im.”
Maurice rolled his shoulders, reaching for the clean rag and mopping at the back of his neck, “I don’t know yer reasons, lad, and, far as I figure, it’s up t’ ya whether or not I should be privy to ‘em, ‘s long as it don’t interfere with yer ability to earn yer pay. We’ll try ya for a week, and if ya can get the girls on yer side and keep yer nose cleaner than a wolf’s tooth, we’ll see about arrangin’ ya a place to stay.”
The bar keep’s eyes suddenly turned ice-cold, and the larger man leant forward, crossing his arms and flexing the muscles necessary to keep order in a pirate’s pub in what could only be interpreted as a warning, “But mark me words, lad, if ya be givin’ me a reason to think that any of me girls are unsafe about ya, I will dip ya straight up and over the pier before a folk can so much as whistle on a tin, if ya get me meaning.”

Mattie listened to the man's words and nodded to him, his violet eyes shining in the light. " Sir... I don't think any of your girls would be in danger around me, but I thank you for your words of warning. And thank you, for giving me the trial period, I appreciate it." Mattie curtsied to the older man, unafraid of his muscles, his memory calling up a more frightening figure. Mattie barely remembered the male, but his ice-purple eyes stayed in Mattie's memory. Those eyes and a pair of golden-brown eyes and stunning red eyes. Mattie picked up his skirts and murmured, " Shall I start today? Sir?"

Maurice gaze did not relent for a few moments, knowing that Matthew’s swift response was not prompted by intimidation and thus needing to confirm its sincerity, before he snorted lightly again, setting his hands on his hips and nodding. “Aye, tis what a body’s usually expectin’ of a new employee and tenant, but,” he quirked an eyebrow, blue eyes glinting in amusement, “May help yer case a bit if ya be actually given’ me a name, ‘lass’, or have ya thought as far on that?”
He chuckled slightly, shaking his head and drifting back to continue sorting through cases of alcohol, “Yer gonna want to have that clear before ya try and pull a fast one on any of the girls—sharp as a knife, some o’ em, and more than likely carryin’ one too. They might not ken to being deceived for too long, if ya get caught.” Maurice hoisted up a box, glancing at Matthew with a pointedly casual shrug, “Not exactly as much me problem as yers, but, word o’ sound advice? Try and not grazin’ any o’ yer open veins across the floor, eh? God only knows what’s been there before ya.”
He brushed past, case in tow, and raised his voice over the din up front. “Ya got the job o’ breakin’ the new one in, Carol! Consider yerself graduated!” In between the drunken cat-calls and supposedly clever retorts in response to the phrase ‘breaking the new one in,’ and what constituted 'graduating', Maurice caught an affirmative ‘ja’, and, sparing a glance to Matthew, gestured the blond up front with his shoulder before vanishing into the kitchen behind the bar.
Don't worry, I'll be my own chara in the next post. XDDD

Mattie smiled and hid it behind his hand, sometimes he forgot how different others can be from him and his kind. Mattie quietly moved forward, past the hooting and hollering men as he made his way to the front, a smile on his face. " Miss Caroline? Thank you for everything. I'm sorry if i didn't give my name before. It's Matthea Jones. I hope that I can meet your standards and the standards of the pub." Mattie smiled and waited for her to tell him what to do, excited to have a chance at a possible home.

Caroline looked up from where she was filling a couple mugs of beer, a wry smile lighting her eyes. “Pleased to meet you formally, Ms. Jones. Or do you prefer Matthea?” Setting the mugs on the counter, the European swiftly slid them down to the trio of men down the bar with practiced ease. As each glass found its customer, the men raised up a mild cheer and drank.
Caroline looked back to Mattie, placing a hand on her hip and wearing a smile that indicated that she was clearly in her element, adjusting her glasses with the other palm. “Now then, how much prior experience do you have running a bar, a restaurant, or an inn?”

Mattie flushed with shame at the question, head tilting downwards in embarrassment as he murmured demurely, " I-I have little experience... back at, home, I was kept under lock and key mainly, sometimes my guards taught me to mix and serve drinks. I do know how to clean and take care of things, but I do not know much. I am a fast learner so I hope to be of some use."
Mattie kept his eyes away from the young woman, a bit nervous that what he said wouldn't help much for the trial run week. Mattie kept his body on guard though, he may be pretending to be a helpless young child, but if anyone tried anything he would gleefully whoop their asses into the next month. He felt eyes on his back and knowingly shifted his stance so that he could attack and defend if need be.

Caroline tilted her head, frowning slightly as she detected something more to the words. ‘Guards?’ After a moment, she made herself smile again, laughing lightly in an attempt to settle the other’s worries, “That should not be a problem—I’ve been serving at a bar since I was at least less than half your age.” Her tawny eyes twinkled, as she smiled at the other, “As long as you do as I do, you should be alright.”
She motioned the girl to come around the bar, lifting two mugs and twirling the handles about her fingers, “You take orders from customers, while I fill some drinks, ja? Green book is for rooms, red book is for restaurant, and blue is for bar. As you do, make sure to keep your hands busy—polish counter, clean glass, as long as it is productive.”
Caroline let a few minutes pass, allowing Mattie to grasp what the job demanded as she performed some sleight of hand for the sake of the customers, sliding drinks and making quips with the careless calm of someone used to such, before she looked to the Canadian again, “So, Madame Jones, did you have a good crossing?” Caroline liked small talk as much as the next young woman, but she felt a particular desire to connect with Mattie, almost as though catching up with an old friend.

Mattie smiled and set to work, a quick smile and soft laugh as he collected drinks and helped with cleaning glasses, little things that kept him busy. Mattie's eyes flicked up to Caroline's face and a darkness swept through them at the memory of escaping before it disappeared. He smiled and murmured, " It was an uneventful trip, Miss Caroline... and please, call me Mattie, it makes me feel more comfortable. Though being on a boat was a wonderful experience in and of itself." Mattie smiled and kept working, keeping her dress clean and making some of the customers smile. Mattie was really liking to work here, helping as best he could.
