His threat was choked by another wave, but he managed to get above it faster by remembering to stand up. He was soaked, hair clinging to his head rather unflatteringly, clothes clinging to skin (which was turning a bright red with embarrassment), and all thoughts of his book were wiped from his mind.
He then set out to tackle the australian for the second time that day so he could bloody drown the little brat.

James continued laughing, even when a wave nearly knocked him over. He grinned, seeing the other approaching, quickly swimming backwards. “Can’t catch me mate!”
And with that he proceeded to swim away as fast as he could. After all, he knew very well that if Arthur caught him there was a good chance he would drown. Or at least, wish that the captain had drowned him.

And that was where Arthur stopped, once he got as far as he could walk in the water. For all his acclaimed status as a pirate captain and (unbeknownst to most of his crew) spy, he'd never once had a chance to learn how to swim. Uneasily, he backed up a bit as another wave came forward, making sure to not get swept out so far as to drown him.

Surfacing a good ways out, James couldn't help from raising an eyebrow when he realized Arthur had not chased after him. And was instead, standing where he could stand in the water. Cocking his head to one side, the Australian cautiously swam back towards the other. Though he stayed a good few feet away, bobbing with the waves.
"What's wrong mate?"

Now that the others attention was on him, Arthur could feel his face starting to turn red with embarrassment instead of the sun. "N-nothing is wrong!" he sputtered, backing up a few more steps to make sure the australian didn't come up and toss him further into the water without him having time to react.

A devious smile had formed now. The thought that the captain didn't know how to swim never crossed James's mind as he swam closer to the Brit, using the waves to his advantage. After all, every pirate knew how to swim! It was like, a requirement or something. Or well it should be.
So really, James just assumed that the captain didn't feel like swimming. So the Australian paid him no mind when he tried to back away. Nor did he pay any attention when Arthur struggled when James had grabbed him, and began dragging the captain out deeper. And it was only when he could barely stand that the Australian halted, and with some difficulties flung his captain into the water. Laughing all the while...
At least until Arthur didn't surface...
"Captain... Oi Cap- SHIT!"

He hit the water head first, and while it wasn't with enough force to stun him, he was turned around - which way was up? Down? He'd been in the process of trying to yelp as well and choked on a mouthful of sea water as he flailed, trying to get some sense of direction. Opening his eyes burned, but he forced himself to look around, trying not to panic and saw the surface not far from his head.
With a heave, he broke free and gasped and choked on the air before his body unwillingly sunk back under again. His flailing hands felt the cool air above the water, but try as he might, he couldn't make it back up to the air.

James swam the distance between himself and where the other was flailing in the water. Even before Arthur had resurfaced. The Australian grabbed one of the flailing arms quickly, giving a small yelp when the other hit him square in the face. "Ack! Come down! I got you! St-Stop hitting me!"
Of course the reasonable part of his mind commented that Arthur probably didn't hear him... Or if he did, probably would've wanted to hit him more.
Somehow though he managed to haul the other to the surface, wrapping the arm he still held around his shoulders, while the other went securely around Arthur's waist. He didn't dare look at the other, somewhat afraid of the death glare he would receive. So instead the Australian focused on swimming back to shore. Where he was sure he was going to get a stern lecture from most of the crew.
Well... Well how was he suppose to know his captain couldn't swim!?

Suffering only a mild embarrassment at clingling to James for dear life while they got closer to land, he was more relieved than anything to be out of danger.
"...James... you know how I said you'd be on privy duties?" he rasped out, voice off from all the salt water he swallowed.

"Let me guess... Worse then privy duties now?" Oh God... James really hoped he wasn't going to get kicked off the crew for this. He wouldn't blame Arthur naturally, but he really hoped that wouldn't be his punishment. The Australian honestly wouldn't know what to do with himself if that was the case. He couldn't imagine going back to his old way of life at this point...
They reached where he knew Arthur could stand, though James kept a firm grip on his arm. Futilely blowing at his wet bangs. "'Sides, how was I s'pose to know you couldn't swim?"

"...no. Let's just agree that you won't have to do them if you never do that again." he stood wobbly on his own, fixing James with a stern look. He pushed his soaked hair out of his eyes, rubbing at them irritably because of the salty waters.

"I have no intentions of ever doin' that again." He couldn't help but sigh in relief, continuing to walk towards the shore. And oh man, he could see Lily already, standing on the beach with her hands on her hips. James was pretty sure he was going to die from the little shelia's wrath. "But seriously... You really don't know how to swim mate?"

He flushed heavily, partially sunburn, partially embarrassment. "Let's put it this way James. I grew up on an island with four older brothers who all wanted to harass me. The one time I tried to learn to swim, my older brother Blaine went and pushed me under. I almost drowned... and promptly refused to go back and learn while I was at home. After I... left home.." he would not say 'ran away, became a slave and then a pirate'... "I never had enough time to learn."

"You have brothers?" He'd never heard the captain mention it before. Blinking with curiosity he looked at his captain, even when they had reached the beach. The Australian handed the captain over to Lily, the little medic fussing worriedly like she often did when one of them was hurt. And he braced himself when the blonde was done with Arthur, turning to face him. And oh man, did James wish he could hide. Lily was intimidating when she wanted to be.
When she was through with her lecture, James flopped down on the sand, allowing the events that had just occurred register through his mind. So he had a captain who didn't know how to swim, because of his older brother named Blaine. The Australian frowned a little, eyes glancing towards where the Brit was. There were two options now. He could either just leave it be or...
With a nod to himself, he stood up, walking over to where his captain was sitting. "D'you want to learn how to swim?"

Thanking Lili for her help and smiling reassuringly that, yes, he was fine, he settled down on the sand, letting the sun dry him off. Startled by James's sudden question, he looked down at the Australian, expecting a joke or some other form of trickery. When, finally, he saw that it was the genuine truth of an offer, the odd look became rather worried. Swim? His old fear of drowning was bubbling up inside him.
And that's what decided him, really. He refused to let fear control him. "...I suppose it IS high time I learned." he allowed grudgingly past his pride. "So long as you don't see fit to throw me to the sharks..."
