Personality:
While Roderich’s behavior appears to follow any variation of the theme “stoic, calm, and sensible”, he is almost the complete opposite. In reality, he is extremely emotional, and only his noble upbringing allows him to take things in a stride. There are few things—or people—that can get a rise out of Roderich, but once he is outside of his comfort zone, he is easily flustered. Roderich prefers to keep others at arm’s length, making it difficult for people to really know him. However, he will go great lengths for those that do manage to get past all his barriers, treating them with warmth and respect in the right situations.
Contrary to popular belief, Roderich does have a sense of humor, albeit a very dry, sarcastic one. His morals do not let him kick the wounded when they’re down, but he isn’t above a little teasing when he is in the mood for it (i.e. his saying “I pity your food culture” to England). He privately finds it amusing to follow an unexpected course of action to provoke reactions from those around him (i.e. his electing the candidate that the Allies were opposed to).
Roderich’s aristocratic laziness results in his pushing mundane chores, such as cleaning, onto others, but once he gets past that laziness, he is obsessively meticulous in his work. It must be noted, however, that anything related to his piano—or music in general—is always handled with great care on his part. He is also well-read and keeps a personal library in his residence. Being the avid reader he is, Roderich prefers organizing his considerable book collection himself so that he may find his favorites without trouble.
History:
Roderich was born into a Viennese noble family that wasted no time in acquainting him with the rules of the court. By the time he turned fifteen, the etiquette lessons were deeply ingrained in his behavior. Though his parents were no longer around, Roderich continued to abide by that particular set of values. Whenever Roderich tried to remember what had happened to his family, he would know only that he had been without them for a very long time. That recollection confused him, given his age; he eventually learned to ignore it, along with the flashes of familiarity he felt when improving his swordsmanship.
In his late teens, Roderich briefly considered joining the Land Pirates, only to almost immediately reject the idea. The Land Pirates fought for the good of the people, but Roderich found the name rather off-putting as the word “Pirate” held a negative connotation in his eyes. Though Roderich held an interest in warfare and tactics at a young age, the mere thought of participating in any such war repelled him. “What need have I for wars? Let others wage it,” he told himself when he realized the direction his thoughts had turned. At that moment, Roderich was unable to shake off his unease; the phrase had fallen from his tongue much too easily, as if he had used it numerous times before.
With that out of the question, Roderich turned to his music to pass the time. He found that people liked his music, and if he played impressively at one noble’s festivities, he could avoid attending the rest of them and still remain in their good graces. He took full advantage of that piece of knowledge until he developed a reputation for being elusive in certain social circles. Though Roderich kept to himself for the most part, he became known in the nearby area as a veritable well of information—considering how much he read—as well as a virtuoso on the piano. As much of a recluse as he was, Roderich still kept a wary eye out for news regarding the state of international affairs. With the conflict between the Land and Sky Pirates getting worse, Roderich vowed to stay out of the mess altogether.
Who is a Beastie?: That slippery fellow, Jack Sparrow.
