He feels some of his strength comes from his ability to make decisions without having to worry about what everyone else will think. His biggest pet peeve is appeasement and he often has to get on people who do this.
The only person that Vash openly shows any fondness for is Lili, whom he has treated like a younger sister since he found her. Vash is extremely frugal, never wanting to waste a dime he doesn't have to. If possible, he will scrimp every penny and pawn anything he doesn't need. He is willing to do typically unfavorable things if there is a cash reward attached to it, however, there is some things he will never do. He does not like being called on his frugality and will deny that he is that bad.
History:
Vash was born in an isolated mountain town. His family had a simple occupation as ranchers. Like all Swiss livestock producers, Vash was taught to walk the animals up and down the mountains for exercise. Once as was strong enough to actually make the full journey, this quickly became one of his past times. From on top of the mountains, he could see the entire village, his entire world. The views up there never got old to him. Before long, he was requesting to make the journey all by himself. Being the type to always take his job seriously, he never lost a single animal.
His contentment was not to last forever. His mother became sick. It had been a slow process and she had bottled in her pain instead of letting anyone know. The doctor in the village didn't have the necessary supplies to cure her when she did finally go in. They sent for the needed remedies and tools, but they took too long arriving.
In the depression that came with losing a cherished spouse, Vash's father decided they needed to move. Everything in the village reminded him of his wife. He sold everything that tied them down and decided on becoming a traveling merchant. Vash had no choice but to follow him along and help with the new family business.
While on the road, they stopped in a quaint town that seemed like it might give them a good profit. Vash was checking out the place, spreading the word of his father's shop, when he was approached by an orphan girl. Vash hadn't been good around little kids when he was a little kid, he had never had an interest in them before. Yet... this one, Lily, was different. Something about her drew Vash in. He brought her to his father, asking if there was any way the girl could live with them. The yes was almost too easy.
Vash instantly filled the big brother role, making sure Lily was always fed and properly taken care of. He practically stalked her to ensure she didn't get hurt. Something inside him just couldn't bear the idea. Over time, his attachment to Lily brought him further from his father. But when the man died of alcohol poisoning, Vash still mourned deeply.
He was now totally responsible for keeping both him and Lily alive. Their merchant business had been sinking rapidly up until his father's death and was the reason the older man had been hitting the booze so hard in the first place. In the same way his father wanted to reinvent himself after Vash's mother died, Vash wanted nothing to do with the occupation his father had died in.
Vash was able to scrounge together some money from odd jobs. By scrimping, he was able to keep food on the table, but only just. He knew he needed work that paid more. He never would have expected where that search would lead.
The job he found was working as a weapons master on a ship. He had no trouble with this job, as he had refurbished several weapons for his father's business in their time abroad. But, it meant he would have to be at sea for long amounts of time. While he wanted to believe that his adopted sister would rather have him around than food, he highly doubted that. Food and a place to live would easily trump his company.
Without being too specific, he filled her in on the nature of his work, that he'd be gone for long amounts of time, but that he'd send her what he earned. At that point, he couldn't be talked out of it. The job would pay too well.
His time on a ship was less enjoyable than he thought it would be. It seemed when motion sickness didn't get him, home sickness did. The days and weeks dragged on. The captain refused to halt his voyage at all. At the few places they did stop, Vash never had any faith in the letters he sent to his sister arriving. It was a year before they finally docked near the area Vash had left her.
But, to his horror, when he arrived, she wasn't there. Filled with a purpose he had never felt before, Vash set off to track her down. Lord help anyone who had taken her against her will.
